Is it dangerous to mix my cleaning products? Can Does Clorox bleach mix with Windex? Can I use two types of drain cleaner a t the same time?

What happens if i do? These are some of the most common questions people have while cleaning their households.

Here are a few items that may be in your cache of cleaning supplies that you should NOT mix and why.

Bleach (Clorox) and Ammonia (Windex)

Bleach and ammonia shouldn't be mixed because toxic gases called chloramines are produced.

Some symptoms include:

  • nausea

  • shortness of breath

  • watery eyes

  • pnemonia and fluid build up in lungs

Bleach and Acids (vinegar, drain cleaners, C.L.R, etc.)

Bleach and acids shouldn't be mixed because chlorine gas is produced. When chlorine gas is mixed with water it creates hydrochloric and hydrochlorus acids.

Some symptoms include:

  • irritation to eyes, throat and nose

  • vomiting

  • death (with high exposure)

Ammonia and Peroxide

Ammonia and peroxide can be used separately but not mixed in one container together. When mixed together ammonia and peroxide because it produces peracetic acid.

Some symptoms include:

  • skin irritation

  • respiratory irritation

  • eye irritation

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar can be used for cleaning, as long as they aren't put in the same container. Baking soda and vinegar can foam up and cause the container to explode.

Drain Cleaner and Drain Cleaner

Two different types of drain cleaner could have two different chemical make ups. Mixing two different types of drain cleaner could cause it an explosion.
